FLIP PHONES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK

For the Razor, the hinge system that takes up one-third of the phone‘s interior space allows the OLED display to have a recognizable binder line. Instead of bending like a piece of paper, it forms a teardrop shape, which prevents the screen from creasing and damaging. The springs and pistons below the surface move small areas where the user presses – folds and slips away. This is an interesting effect, as you can see in the banner image, it does not achieve an optically flat perfection.

FLIP PHONES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK

It’s definitely gimmicky, but phones like the Samsung Galaxy Fold, Motorola Razor and Huawei Matex are elegant from an engineering perspective. Developing a seamless interface experience, increasing surface area for functionality, and maintaining the same nostalgic flip phone aesthetics while using the familiar smartphone features is not an easy design process.

For the Razor, the hinge system that takes up one-third of the phone’s interior space allows the OLED display to have a recognizable binder line. Instead of bending like a piece of paper, it forms a teardrop shape, which prevents the screen from creasing and damaging. The springs and pistons below the surface move small areas where the user presses – folds and slips away. This is an interesting effect, as you can see in the banner image, it does

not achieve an optically flat perfection. To ensure that the screen does not overheat, it is made up of sandwiches that are sandwiched together. To balance the weight, the circuits and the battery are split into two, each part of the device is an exceptional design option for smartphones. Keeping a range of radios and antennas is also a challenge, as they are not too close to each other or to the processor, which can hinder signal transmission. Other devices like the Royal FlexPoy are proof-of-concepts that use flexible screens and batteries, without capturing the beauty of the flip phone generation – but who doesn’t want to get into their smartphone tablet when needed? The future of smartphone technology is interesting and we will definitely see more repetitions of flexible displays in the near future.
